Upper East Side Duplex Renovation

Location: New York, NY
Status: Completed
Sq. ft.: 2,600

  • This midcentury high-rise apartment was reenvisioned as a more comfortable, family-friendly home designed in response to every resident’s needs—even those of the youngest family members. The duplex hadn’t been modified since the 1980s, and the renovation uncovered an opportunity to not only update the existing interiors, but to also create new spaces specifically for the clients’ two school-aged children.

The apartment’s interior layout was rethought to create bigger bedrooms for the children, each decorated with colorful murals and furnishings that make these spaces feel like their own. A new playroom becomes a venue for creative exploration and provides easy storage for toys and games. The kids’ dedicated bath was expanded and outfitted with hand-selected furnishings, new fixtures, and graphic, geometric-patterned tiles. The master bath was also redone with elegant porcelain-tile cladding, and a walnut vanity and luxurious jacuzzi tub featuring classic-but-contemporary fixtures. Carefully planned closets and storage throughout the apartment serve to keep clutter under control.

Coordination of approvals with the owners’ co-op board and the New York City Department of Buildings was streamlined and built into the client service offering. By navigating this protracted process and providing agile project management and construction supervision, the residents were able to remain in their home during the renovation.
